Playlists for 12/2/10 and 12/17/10: Julia, It's You

Behind again. This time with a really good reason: our first baby! Weighing in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces, Julia Rose Turner was born 12/11/10 at 1:12 p.m. Between Julia and the end of the semester, just a little busy. Good John was kind enough to do Zero Hour on 12/10 as Corri and I were heading to the hospital. Thanks, John! I'll be off again this Friday, Christmas Eve, with Paul Host taking over from noon to 9 p.m. for his awesome annual holiday spectacular. I'll be back New Year's Eve playing my favorite new releases and reissues from 2010. Tune in! New music recently from the likes of Gentlemen Jesse & His Men, Dan Montgomery, Bastards of Melody and Rev. John Wilkins.

Triple Play + 1 or the October That Ate My Brain

I hope to never get this far behind on posting again. Teaching six courses this semester means I always have about as many papers to grade as songs on these four playlists.

In recent weeks, I've saluted Jerry Lee Lewis, truck driving music, and baseball, mourned the passing of Solomon Burke and General Johnson, and interviewed Bobby Hussy from Kind Turkey Records and The Hussy. A terrific batch of new music has arrived recently: Drugs Dragons, Jonathan Burks, the City Champs, the Iggy Pop and James Williamson Kill City reissue, the Ugly Beats, Los Explosivos, the Moaners, Daddy Rockin' Strong: A Tribute To Nolan Strong and the Diablos, and a whole bunch of goodies from Norton Records (with more on the way).

I've opened with Halloween themes the past two weeks, and I'm planning an all-Halloween show next week, which features a star-studded lineup. I'm doing a phone interview with Sam Steining from Mondo Topless in advance of the band's Nov. 4 appearance at Frank&#…

Playlist for 9/24/10: Stay Humble or You're Sure to Stumble

I generally only seek advice from truck stops, so when I saw a sign from the highway that read, "Stay Humble or You're Sure to Stumble," I knew I had to go with the straighten-up-and-live-right theme this week. Dug into the '80s vinyl for a set and played new music from the Murdocks and the Piney Gir Country Roadshow, who battled with the Breakup Society for longest (and best) song title of the show: I'm Better Off Without A Piece Of A Shell Of A Man vs. She Doesn't Know She's Not Supposed to Like Me Yet.

Playlist for 9/17/10: Lie to Me

With the primary season over and November elections on the way, it seemed like the right moment to send a big kiss out to mendacity. New music from Wheels on Fire, No Bunny and Superchunk and a tribute to the late King Coleman.

Playlists for 9/3/10 and 9/10/10: Workin' For My Baby

Doubling up on the playlists after finally getting some time to put them together. Corri and I took a trip to Minneapolis last weekend to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary, which I honored with this week's opening theme. The trip to the Twin Cities and the candylands that are The Electric Fetus and Cheapo Discs netted me some nice used LP finds, some of which I played this week and some of which I wish I allowed to play on the air. Lots of new music this week from Norton Records and the brand new single from the Oblivians. I honored the working man and gal with my opening set last week.

Playlist for 8/13/10: Monkey Lessons Needed

Hoped to promote widespread wiggling with the opening theme this week. Sorry to disappoint anyone aching to do the Slop, the Hully Gully, the Watusi, the Hunch, or the Dirty Hickup (might have made that last one up). Next time. For the fourth week running, I started the show with a song from the storied vaults of Specialty Records, which will get the I Love My Label treatment next week. Miriam from Norton Records e-mailed me the awesome You Tube Badger A Go-Go link featuring an enthusiastic Oshkette doing the wild dairy shuffle circa 1966. The A-Bones provide the soundtrack.

Playlist for 7/30/10: Seeing Orange

The road construction around the Milwaukee area this summer has me a little nutty, so I tried to work out my issues by making it the opening theme of the show. Worked well until I got in the car again.

Last night, I subbed for Rich Mars on the City Rock Showgram, which you can check out here. Also, tune in 3-6 Saturday afternoon during the Why My Head Hurts show. I'll be stopping by around 4 or so to interview the most excellent Million Sellers, who are appearing Saturday night at Frank's Power Plant. Be there or prepare for another regretful Sunday morning.
